It’s a question we’re often asked – Should I feed my dog wet or dry food? Well one is not better than they other but lets take a look at both sides of the story and check out the pros and cons for each type of food.
Dry food (biscuit, kibble)
For convenience for you and a shiny coat for your dog, this is definitely a great option. No hassle for storage and feeding. Dry food doesn’t need refrigeration once opened and also doesn’t spoil. It can also be used as a treat when doing dog training, and helps improve dental health!
There are various options such as cost-effective supermarket options right up to the premium ‘vet-recommended’ options. Remember to select one that is a ‘complete meal’ rather than just a snack food. Generally, dry foods have more essential nutrients than wet food.
Wet & Canned Pros and Cons:
Wet foods are often higher in fat content than dry food, and the moment you open it, you stop its shelf life and it must be refrigerated. It needs to be covered and consumed quickly.
Some dogs will only eat wet food, so its important to monitor this and ensure a higher quality brand is used if this is the case.
If your pooch is sick, the wet type of dog food is often better as it takes lesser effort to consume while she’s getting essential vitamins for her to get better.
We don’t recommend wet food if your dog is prone to putting on weight and because of the higher fat content a smaller portion is always best.
Who wins? It’s up to you to choose which is best for your dog as long as it’s balanced and it’s made with quality ingredients that can give your dog proper nutrition. Try mixing both foods, or offer the wet food less often or only as a treat.
