Dogs can run away for many reasons but it’s usually because your pooch is out to look for an adventure or to find a mate! Here are a few other reasons why you pup may be constantly looking for an adventure:
Boredom, social reasons and finding a mate
Dogs that are often locked in a cage or yard for long periods of time may run away simply due to the fact that they’re bored and want to socialise with other dogs. Primal urges can also cause them to roam as they seek to mate. Male dogs can detect the odor of estrogen in the wind, thus making them eager to go out and find that mate.
Predatory Drive
Seeking and finding prey is one of the most powerful natural tendencies your dog possesses. You may provide all the food that your dog needs but they still crave the excitement of chasing and hunting, and this behaviour can be very self-rewarding.
Phobias
Have you noticed your dog has a particular phobia? Especially dogs that have been rescued, a dog may be traumatised simply by a loud noise like a vacuum cleaner, which can be very scary. Thunderstorms and fireworks are also good examples of noises that can really frighten them so consider allowing the dog indoors during such times.
