We have often asked ourselves why do our dogs dig holes in the garden, and scratch and circle their (or our) bed before deciding to lie down. This is all to do with their primitive instinct, and our dogs have the desire to sleep in and under things that resemble a den. Our pups will also dig to keep cool and comfortable, for entertainment or to bury items of value to them.
You would have noticed that your dog often tries to dig into the bed and make circles before eventually lying down. They do this to try and make the ground softer and more comfortable for them to sleep. Dogs will often dig to make themselves more comfortable and try to cool down. You might have noticed that the holes your dog digs to lie down in are strategically located in cool areas, such as under trees, bushes or furniture.
Dogs also dig to bury items they see as value. They may bury bones, food, toys and even small, dead animals. This behaviour was necessary to the survival of your dogs’ distant ancestors, so they could safely bury food and eat it later. Obviously your dog doesn’t need to bury food in order to eat it is just a natural instinct to them.
Many dogs love to dig for fun, with certain breeds doing it a lot more than others. When dogs are digging for fun, they are often in a hyperactive mood and alternating between running around and digging. You can see your dog having a great time, however your yard may be littered with holes, so you should be careful when walking around.
