In Australia you can find the 10 most venomous snakes in the world, though its comforting to know approximately 80% of pets survive a snakebite if treated quickly.
Humans are the most vulnerable and worryingly about 3000 snakebites occur each year in Australia alone. Did you know that since our dogs spend a lot of time at coastal areas, bush land and at farms they have a far higher percentage of snakebite than us humans. The chances of survival of our dog depends on the type of snake and the amount of venom entered into the system.
What to do if your dog is bitten:
- Identify the symptoms – bloody urine, drooling, dilated pupils, trembling, and weakness in the back legs.
- Locate the area where the dog was bitten – wrap it up with a bandage that is not to tight
- Take your pooch to the nearest vet in order to identify the type of snake and then they can administer the necessary anti-venom.
If your dog pulls through, full recovery will take 1 to 2 days under the vet’s supervision.
Keep in mind that a snake bite can be life threatening for a dog. If you don’t act swiftly, it will only take just 30 mins to 2 hours to be fatal so act quick.
Make sure you have the right pet insurance, so you do not have to worry about the expenses.
