This island is around 5 km long and 1 km wide. Since the 1950s, the island has been home to a small community of artists, and has its own art gallery. Respecting the tradition, Tory islanders choose a “king” by consensus. The king does not have any formal powers, but plays a role of spokesperson for the island community, he also welcomes people who are new to the island. Doogie the Dolphin welcomes people as well. Dolphins are lauded for their communication skills, and also for the unique ability to heal. Dolphin therapy appeared in the 1970s and has grown in popularity ever since. It beneficial to people suffering from both physical and mental disabilities. Working with dolphins has helped improve the motor skills of disabled children, helped some autistic children to start communicating, children with learning disabilities have shown improvement after engaging in dolphin therapy. This alternative therapy has brought amazing positive results where other forms of treatment, both conventional and alternative, have failed.
Tory Island, officiallly known as Toraigh Island, with its population just a tad over 130 people has not much exciting stuff going on. Except for this, which appeared on the UK’s weekly news programme Countryfile, covering news of different parts of the UK’s countryside. A yellow Lab from a local hotel, named Ben, visits the pier, jumps off and paddles to see his very unusual friend every day. Their friendship has melted the hearts of millions and made the island known all around the globe. These two attract tourists who come to Tory Island just to witness the dog splashing with his buddy.
