We all know it’s inevitable that at some stage throughout its life, your dog will have fleas. They can cause your dog to scratch and bite, and it’s very important that you try your upmost to prevent fleas from becoming a serious problem. Make sure you have the right Pet Insurance, to avoid huge expenses. These following tips will help you and your pooch live comfortably and flea free.
- Give your dog regular flea medication.
These flea medications work with the oil glands in the skin to covers your dogs’ body. When the fleas attach themselves to your dog they are killed very quickly, usually before they can lay eggs or bite your pooch.
- Wash your dogs’ bed.
It’s important to wash your dogs bedding regularly to prevent a flea outbreak. Fleas can hide in the bed ready to attack your pooch once they hop on. Washing the bed in hot, soapy water will kill the fleas and make sure your pooch has a restful nights sleep.
- Wash your dog with a flea shampoo
Bathing your dog with a specially medicated shampoo will stop a flea outbreak in its tracks. Although labour intensive, these shampoos kill fleas immediately and will stop all that uncomfortable scratching. You will need to shampoo your dog regularly to completely manage fleas.
- Use a flea comb
Flea combs are specially designed to pull those annoying fleas out of your dogs’ fur. They have teeth that are very close together so the fleas have nowhere to hide once you brush over them. This is a great option for managing fleas, especially if you don’t like putting chemicals over your dogs’ skin. However, the comb does not pull out the flea eggs, so it is not the most effective way to manage a flea outbreak.
- Have a clean house.
Regular vacuuming and cleaning of your house, especially the floors will go a long way to protecting your dog from fleas. Fleas can hide in carpet and attach themselves to your dog when they lie down. Regular vacuuming can pick up these annoying pests before they have time to attack your pup.
We suggest you follow these steps to keep you and your dog happy and healthy, and we know our pet minders will appreciate your flea free pooch.
