Dog owners frequently worry when they see that their pup just isn’t eating as much as usual. Many often believe that this immediately indicates that the dog is not feeling well, however a dog’s appetite can fluctuate for many reasons. If your pooch has not eaten for a day or two and shows aggression and alertness, as long as you don’t see any signs of illness then there is likely nothing for you to worry about.
Warm weather can also be a cause for not eating too much. We need to remember that our pooches are descendants of wolves that used to travel in packs- they didn’t eat every day.
If the following symptoms occur & your dog has a loss of appetite consult a vet within 24 hrs.
- weakness
- cough
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- fever
- apparent pain
- change in normal bathroom habits
- change in the appearance of the mouth that could indicate an abscessed tooth
Treatment is never the same for any two cases, but you can expect a complete exam that may include urine, blood and bowel analysis, x-rays, endoscopies, biopsies or electro-cardiograms to determine the cause. Your dog may receive subcutaneous fluids if dehydrated and he may be force fed. Make sure you have the right pet insurance, so you do not have to worry about the expenses.
