Ornaments
They are a nice addition to the home for a ‘Christmassy’ feel but be sure to look after your furry fellow as he may think they are toys to be played with. Many are made of aluminum and sharp plastics that may injure or even choke your pooch when left unattended.
Chocolate
We all love to welcome or farewell our guests with gourmet chocolates but remember to keep an eye out as your dog may just nab a box for himself. Chocolates are a yummy treat for us but definitely a no-no to dogs as cocoa can be fatal to canines.
Poisonous holiday plants
Holiday plants are very decorative and can be placed indoors, but be careful when placing them within a dog’s reach as well as your kids, especially toddlers. Poinsettia, Mistletoe and Holly plants are an example of toxic plants. When the leaves or fruit are swallowed it may cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and even death.
Fatty foods
While enjoying a slice of that ham, look beside and you’ll see those big puppy dog eyes asking for a bite, but hold off!
A lot of holiday human food has a high fat and salt content, which isn’t great for your dog so remember to let your guests know not to feed the 4-legged kids. Also be careful when giving them poultry bones as they are brittle when cooked and may cause lacerations in the intestinal system.
