We change our routines and take extra precaution when the temperatures drop, and the same should be done for your fur-child. Here are five tips to help keep your dog safe and comfortable this winter:
- Do not leave pets in the car during the winter. You wouldn’t leave your pet alone in the vehicle while it’s hot outside, and cold weather can be just as dangerous. The cold air will be trapped in the car putting your pup at risk for hypothermia.
- Limit time spent outdoors. Your pet’s life can be at risk when the temperature drops if they spend too much time outside. The wind chill affects them more than we realise and exposed skin can quickly freeze. You can still let them out and take them on walks, just be conscious of how much time they are spending out in the cold.
- Keep a close eye on cold symptoms. Just like you, your dog is more prone to getting a cold during the winter. If your pup is experiencing coughing, a runny nose, sneezing, or watery eyes that might have a virus. To help treat this, increase your dog’s fluid intake and give them extra TLC. If their condition does not improve, it is best to visit your vet.
- Supply plenty of food and water. Dogs expend more energy in the winter because they are trying to keep warm. It is important to keep their supply refreshed so that your pup doesn’t become dehydrated. Ask your pet sitter to leave plenty of water out for your pup.
- Time for a check up. When cold weather rolls around, it is smart to take your pup to the veterinarian to make sure that they do not have any medical issues. If they do, this could make them more vulnerable to the cold. You should ask your vet for advise on how to best handle this. Make sure your Pet Insurance covers this, so you do not have to worry about the expenses.
