Does it ever feel like whenever you look at your dog they are always sleeping? Whether it be on the couch, a dog bed, in a dog kennel, or just on the floor, it seems dogs sleep a lot more than humans. However, dogs sleep very differently from us, in just about every way from duration to frequency.
Us humans are typically awake anywhere from 16-18 hours at a time, and then we go to sleep for around 8 hours. Dogs do not have a regular routine like this, they take a series of short naps during the day, then they’ll wake up for food, exercise or to scare the mailman, then fall straight back to sleep.
Research indicates that dogs spend as little as 10% in a deep sleep, whereas humans can spend anywhere from 20-30% in this deep sleep. Dogs sleep in much shorter bursts, so it is much harder for them to fall into this deep sleep that many of us humans crave.
Dogs can sleep anywhere up to 18 hours a day, this varies upon the size, breed, age, activity levels, and diet. If you notice your pup sleeping alot, don’t worry, its completely normal.
