Studies show that dogs cannot exist in our society without human companions. If they are found without owners sadly they will often end up in the pound. They will stay there for up to 6 weeks and if a new home cannot be found, these dogs may be euthanised.
Each year, Dogs Trust conduct a survey to assess the nation’s stray and abandoned dog problem. There were more than 100,000 dogs being picked up by local authorities and this increases yearly. Tragically, only 48% were reunited with their owners and sadly 6%, that is about 20 dogs in a day are put down.
Only a very small percentage were rehoused either directly to the public or via an animal welfare group. This means that between 15% and 30% are listed as “outcome unspecified”.
There has been a broad agreement made on the best way to deal with this problem – by ensuring dogs are desexed – this type of procedure is costly though. Make sure you have the right pet insurance, so you do not have to worry about the expenses. It is also expensive to care for unwanted animals until they find a new home and this is an ongoing issue, which doesn’t receive any government funding just voluntary donations. If you’re considering buying a new puppy, instead consider fostering an unwanted or unloved dog – you may just find it an incredibly rewarding experience!
