As a dog owner or dog minder we have all experienced the slobber when a dog starts licking your hands or face when you greet him or even when just laying on the couch together. Many people who are not used to it react with a lack of understanding and sometimes disgust. Some dog owners are not sure if they should forbid the licking or if it is acceptable behaviour. To answer this we’ll first give you an understanding of what this behaviour is based upon.
The Origin of Licking
Directly after the birth of the puppies, the mother starts licking them. She does this to clean them, but also to build a connection. Further, it helps to familiarise with the individual smells of each of her puppies. After each feed, the mother starts to lick her puppies again to start the digestion and to further tighten the relationship. The puppies memorise the licking of her mother as an act of affection, love and an important gesture in their social life. When the puppies begin to be fed less, they start to lick their mother as a sign to regurgitate predigested food. This is also a sign of affection and submissiveness.
The Meaning of Dogs Licking Humans
In this case you need to differ between a baby and an adult. When your pooch starts to lick your newborn or a small child, it is similar to a dog licking his puppies. He wants to protect the baby, shows his care and attention. In the worst case, the dog would defend the baby like as if it was his own.
When your dog starts licking you or other adults, it can mean that he is submissive or wants your attention. Some dogs do that to politely ask for food: “I know that I am below you in the hierarchy and I know that I am not allowed to demand it, but it would be nice if you could give me some food.”
Doubts About Hygiene
Of course it’s not hygienic when your dog licks your hands or even your face, because during the day your pooch puts his snout in all kinds of yuck things. Nevertheless it is not recommended to completely stop your dog from licking, as it is a natural behaviour and he will get confused and not understand why he has to stop it. If you don’t want your baby or yourself to be licked in the face, you can offer your hands instead. You can wash your hands easily and your dog is happy, because he can follow his natural instincts. This is not just positive for your dog, but also for your relationship with your fur-friend.
