Sometimes we lose ourselves in having too much fun that we forget about our furry friend being scared of all the loud noises around, especially in big events where fireworks are usually used. Even the biggest dogs will turn into scared puppies amidst such a ruckus of noise. Those kinds of noises can traumatize your pooch enough that even just a screen door crashing would cause him to moan, hide and even run in fear. If your home is close to fireworks during annual celebrations such as New Years Eve you may have to consider staying in that night or sending your dog to his favourite pet minder.
You can soothe your pup by doing these:
- Do not comfort your pooch too much when he/she is scared. That will just encourage him to continue that behaviour. Instead of showing your pity, show your smiles and say something like “Wow, that was great! See? We’re not scared?”
- You can muffle the noise by placing cotton on your dog’s ears but be sure to consult your vet on how to put them on.
- Thunder and lightning couldn’t be avoided, so try distracting your dog with commands and special tricks to get him into doing something which will get him distracted from thinking about his fear and get him/her focused on you as try to make it a good time for him.
- Play soothing music as there are certain types of music that are proven to calm and relax the brain waves of your dog.
