With the upcoming summer months, it’s important to keep your dog cool! Below are some tips on keeping your dog cool this summer:
Change your walking time.
It is best to move your dog’s walking times to early mornings and late afternoons when it’s cooler outside. Also try to find a shady route to take your dog to avoid asphalt and hot pavements, which can burn their paws.
Don’t leave your dog in the car!
Leaving a dog in a car on a hot day can be deadly. The temperature in a car can rise to a dangerous level very quickly and even if the car is in the shade dogs can still overheat. Make sure to keep your air conditioner running while your dog is traveling in the car with you.
Keep your dog hydrated.
Bring water and a collapsible bowl for water breaks during your walks. Make sure to not leave your dog outside in the heat and always make sure your dog has water available around the house.
Continually watch for signs of dehydration to make sure your dog isn’t suffering from the heat. Find new ways to cool your dog such as kiddie pools and misting fans to make sure you dog can handle the heat.
Watch out for heatstroke.
It’s important to be aware that hot, long summer days can cause heatstroke in many dogs. Some of the symptoms of heatstroke include heavy panting, vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness, and excessive thirst. If your dog is suffering from any of these symptoms make sure to move them to a shady, cool area and start by giving the dog a little water. Giving your pup too much water at once may cause the dog to vomit. Also lower your dog’s body temperature by cooling them with a wet towel or fan. If your dog is experiencing heatstroke take your pup to a vet where they can monitor the dog’s temperature and make sure there are no other complications.
Different dogs have different way of dealing with the heat make sure to tell your pet minder about concerns you have with your dog dealing with the heat.
