However in doing that, you should also know how to protect yourself from being bitten. You must be asking by now on what you should do to break up a dog fight. As there are lots of ways and situations to consider in breaking up dogs in a fight, here are few steps to keep in mind for small and medium-sized dogs.
1. Calm Down
Although dog fights are scary, violent and loud, you should stop screaming and stay calm. Observe and pay attention on what is going on. You should be able to identify the top dog, which is literally the dog on top of another, or the dog with higher level of intensity, which is most likely to be the top dog at some point.
2. Look for the best timing to grab the Top Dog
When one dog is on top of another, you are able to reach in quickly, and without hesitation, grab the top dog by the base of its tail and raise its rear legs off the ground. With its back legs off the ground, this top dog will lose its balance and focus. Thus, it will no longer be able to attack and bear down on the underdog. Also, this top dog’s angle of bite and attack will have shifted dramatically.
- Slowly swing the Top Dog
You must slowly step backward and start swinging the dog in a gentle arc so it that it has to keep scrambling along the ground with its front paws in order to remain upright and to avoid “falling”.
- Keep your cool and make the dog feel you are in control.As long as the dog’s legs are off the ground and you keep moving it in an arc, the dog will have to keep scrambling to avoid falling over. This is how you will know that you are in control and will remain in control.
What about the other dog?
Most of the time, the underdog is in the bottom and is also the one which is more eager to break off with the fight, as he is losing his edge from the top dog.
